01.11.2011· Have a look for the plans of the 'mirror-o-matic' by Denis Reichs. There are some pictures of mine on the website. The plans are sized for a 12" version or a 20" version but the 12" version can do up to 18" or so. It will do pretty much everything you want it to do but is not a hogging accelerator like, say, a diamond wheel on a hnd grinder swung from a ceiling joist.

On the opposite, a shallow mirror (e.g. F/D = 8) will be performing very well on planets and the moon. The theory behind grinding is that you can remove glass as long as you use a material with a higher hardness. Telescope makers use silicon carbide powders (a.k.a. carborundum) for this task. It is cheap and comes in various size (can range

Fixed-post machine grinding is where the mirror is on a turntable rotating around 20 PRM [speeds vary], and a 75% tool is on top. They are already curve-generated. The tool is hanging over the mirror by 1/6 the diameter of the tool, or about 1/8 diameter of the mirror, and is fixed in this position. The motor turns the mirror and the differential rotation enables the grit and water to grind

Stellafane ATM:Mirror Making Myths
Telescope mirrors can be made in your kitchen, basement or garage with nothing more than the mirror blank and a second piece of glass (called the tool) to rub the mirror against with an abrasive grit and water slurry. You can do this on a wet towel on your kitchen counter, on a board with a few cleats screwed to in on your lap, or the traditional way on a barrel or pedestal. You need no

19.08.2019· I've decided to build my own fixed-post glass grinding and polishing machine. Gordon Waite is probably one of the better mirror makers using this machine and have incorporated some of his ideas into my plan. I like the fixed-post plan vs others with eccentric drives, because it gets the heavy grinding done in an automated manner, but still give you the chance to hand-figure.
GRINDING A TELESCOPE REFLECTOR WITH TOOL-GRINDING DEVICE
Grinding telescope reflectors of 15-inch diameter and over makes it necessary to employ a motor-driven turntable. Small mirrors are generally ground and polished by rotating the tool, fastened to the turntable, and working the mirror blank by hand either in straight or in circular strokes over the tool. In this case the overhang of the mirror tends to gradually cut down the rim of the tool and

Fine grinding. A flatness in the range of 1 µm can be reached by grinding three glass blanks alternatingly against each other, blank 1 on 2, 2 on 3, 3 on 1, and so on. This will be continued with each Carbo grade. After fine grinding, one of the blanks is picked as the future flat mirror and will be polished.
